SMPP SMSSMPP SMS, or Short Message Peer to Peer SMS, refers to sending and receiving SMS text messages via SMPP protocol. SMPP is an open standard industry protocol designed for SMS messaging often in bulk and at high speed. It is used to exchange the SMS between SMSC and external entities like business applications. SMPP SMS is supported by almost all mobile network operators, SMS service providers and SMS gateways worldwide because it is one of the most commonly used protocol for SMS messaging. SMPP SMS is mainly used by companies and organizations who require high volume SMS sending each month. For this purpose SMPP SMS is ideal since it is a reliable protocol and it was designed to deliver large amount of text messages. It was made to allow integration of data applications and GSM, CDMA, TDMA, and UMTS mobile networks. The official SMPP 3.4 specification can be downloaded here: smpp34.pdfSMPP SMS supports the main SMS features:
The SMPP protocol defines a range of operations for the exchange of text messages between an External Short Message Entity (ESME) and an SMSC; and also the data that an ESME application must exchange with an SMSC during SMPP operations. SMPP is based on the transmission of request and response protocol data units (PDUs) between the ESME and the SMSC over an underlying TCP/IP or X.25 network connection. Every SMPP operation must consist of a request PDU and linked response PDU. The receiving entity must return the associated SMPP response to an SMPP PDU request. Example request and response PDU for submit_sm and submit_sm_resp:
