MMS Gateway
MMS gateway is a software product that is responsible for forwarding
MMS messages from a computer to the MMS Center (MMSC). After the MMS gateway forwarded
the MMS message to the MMSC the recipient will be informed about the incoming
MMS via a MMS indication SMS message.
MMS for computers
Not many people know that a multimedia message can be sent not only from a mobile phone
but also from a computer. MMS is implemented using a combination of WAP and SMS
technologies. MMS allows to send multimedia content such as pictures,
graphics, music, images, and ringtones. The MMS standard includes an MMS mail client
on the device, a WAP gateway for sending and receiving messages and a Multimedia
Messaging Service Center (MMSC) for storing, transcoding and relaying messages.
So, it can be claimed, an MMS gateway fills the most important part in the MMS sending
process. You can’t send MMS messages without an MMS gateway. However if you already
use an SMS gateway, it is pretty sure that it will also be able to handle MMS messages.
An MMS gateway acts like a relay between computer
technology and telephoning technology.
How the process looks like
Another thing you will also need is an application on your computer made for MMS
sending (and receiving). The sending process happens in five easily understandable steps:
1) First, you have to compose the MMS message with the help of an application.
2) Your MMS gateway connects and transmits the MMS message content to the MMSC.
Then the MMSC takes responsibility for further delivery.
3) The MMS message content is published so that it is accessible via URL.
4) An MMS notification message is sent to the recipient mobile phone, encapsulated
in a WAP push message, which itself is encoded as a binary SMS. This MMS notification
message contains header information about the MMS message, and a URL pointer that
tells the mobile phone how to retrieve the MMS message content.
5) The recipient mobile phone opens a WAP session, and retrieves the MMS message
content from the URL contained in the MMS notification message.
