SMS from Computer
SMS from computer refers to the process of sending SMS text messages to a mobile
phone from a computer instead of another phone. There can be many advantages of
this method, especially when you want to send great amounts of SMS messages (for
marketing purposes, for example).

SMS from computer is available easily by setting up your own SMS
system. You will most importantly need an
SMS gateway. This SMS gateway will be the
relay between the two technologies: the computer technology and the telephony
technology. It means that you can send out SMS messages from your computer to the
recipient mobile phone via the mobile network. For this purpose you need to
connect your SMS gateway to the mobile network in two ways:
- GSM SMS:
One option is to connect with a GMS modem (or a mobile phone, because today most mobile
phones can also be used as a wireless modem). A GSM/GPRS modem is a wireless modem that
works with GSM/GPRS wireless networks. A wireless modem is similar to a dial-up modem.
The main difference is that a wireless modem transmits data through a wireless network
whereas a dial-up modem transmits data through a copper telephone line. Either you have
chosen to use a modem or a phone, you have to connect your device to your computer with a
data cable. After the connection is made and the gateway is installed you are ready to
operate with incoming and outgoing SMS messages.

- IP SMS:
The other way is to use an Internet based connection (IP SMS connection). In this case a
TCP/IP link is used to connect to the Short Message Service Center (SMSC) of a mobile
network or an SMS service provider. For this purpose you need to sign a contract with your GSM service
provider to get direct access to its SMSC. With the contract you will receive the
service provider's IP address, a port number, a username and password to access their service.
When a connection to the SMSC is available, an SMS protocol (like: UCP, SMPP and CIMD2) is
required for you to be able to send and receive SMS messages.

Its your decision which way to use but if you really want to handle a huge SMS traffic, IP
SMS connection is recommended because GSM modem has a major limitation of 6-10 messages
per minute.
