Send SMS from PC
Send SMS from PC refers to the process when SMS text messages are sent from a computer
to cellphones via the mobile network. For this purpose a computer application,
called SMS gateway, is required. SMS gateways
allow users to compose, send and receive SMS messages
in their computers.
Send SMS from PC requires an SMS gateway that handles SMS deliveries from the computer.
In order to do so, it must connect to the GSM network via a GSM modem
or the Internet. If there is a need for large amount of SMS message transfer, then usually
broadband internet is used to directly connect
gateways to the SMSC
(SMS Center). An SMS center is a terminal that handles SMS deliveries
at the network/service provider.
Send SMS from PC happens in basically two ways. It can be done with a wireless
connection by using a GSM/GPRS modem or mobile phone that is connected to the computer.
Similarly to a standard mobile phone, a wireless connection also requires a Subscriber
Identification Module, or SIM card, which has to be inserted to the mobile phone or GSM
modem that is connected to the PC. These devices vary in terms of connection options,
since some support Bluetooth connection, or data cable connection. Others can only connect
to the PC through a USB cable.
After the connection is established, these wireless
connections are capable of sending a few hundred SMS messages per minute, when connected
with the SMS gateway. There are a few minor differences between using a mobile phone or
a GSM modem. Most popular are GSM modems, since they are more reliable and are dedicated
devices for this purpose. GSM modems has an average capacity of 6-10 SMS per minute.
The other, much faster way to send SMS from PC is with a direct link to the SMSC
of a network provider using internet connection. An IP direct connection is used for its attribute of
high-speed SMS delivery, since it can carry up to hundreds of SMS messages per second.
It is ideal for organizations that require SMS delivery
in high volume, some may have millions of contacts and it is important to transmit
information within a short time.
Whenever a user intends to establish a direct link with the SMSC, an agreement must be made
prior to the connection between the user and the SMS service provider to agree upon the
monthly cost and to allow access to its SMSC. Access is granted when the service
provider gives out the IP address, port number, username and the password of the SMSC.
In SMS over IP this purpose is made possible by the use of protocols that the SMSC
supports.
Some SMS centers set up a VPN tunnel that encodes the SMS message data, in
order to provide more security. Gateways can be configured to work with VPN tunnels,
and allow the SMS messages to be encrypted to work with the same protocol the SMSC
works with.
